Hooded Oriole - Icterus cucullatus

The Hooded Oriole was the first Oriole I saw in my yard, and has been a yearly visitor since. It is the Oriole I have more trouble naming than any other, as I tend to say Scott's instead of Hooded since the Scott's has a black "hood" and this one has a black mask. The Hooded is a medium sized, broad necked bird with a long tail and slightly downwardly curved bill. The adult male has a bright yellow to orange colored body with a black fore face and neck. The female has dull grayish green upper parts with washed pale yellow underparts. In the United States the Hooded is found in parts of Southwest Texas, Southwest New Mexico, South and West Arizona, Southern Nevada and most of California.
