Orange Variant House Finch - Carpodacus mexicanus

House Finches are fairly small, slender, small-headed birds with relatively short conical bills. Their tails are long and and slightly notched. Adult males have variable red or red-orange colors on the head, breast and rump. They have a whitish belly and flanks which are strongly streaked with brown; their back is brownish with indistinct streaks. The adult females have a finely streaked brown head, and a week facial pattern and dusky streaking on their underparts. House Finches are found throughout the United States. Most of the House Finches I get in my yard are the normal Red; however, every now and then we get an orange or yellow variant.
