Gambel's Quail

One of two Quails found in the Arizona desert. This is the main quail I find in my yard. Gambel's Quail prefer to run when possible instead of flying, when they do fly it is usually not for long distances. Both adult sexes will have a black head plume, yellowish breast and belly, and reddish brown flanks. The male has a black chin and face bordered by a white stripe and a rich reddish brown crown. The females head, chest and face is gray and relatively unmarked. This picture was taken mid May of 2011.
