The Western Tanager is found throughout most of the Western U.S. during the summer. Normally they can be found in deciduous and mixed forests, shade trees and oaks. We had an irruption of them this year, and as a result I had up to 6 in my "no tree" yard at one time through the middle of June. This is the male Western Tanager in breeding plumage, the female is a duller yellow in color.
